How To Throw The Perfect Dinner Party

Tips and Tricks to Throwing Successful Dinner Parties

“Who let Sally sit next to Tom?”

“How many drinks has Uncle Eddy had?”

“Who brought up politics?”

Let’s face it, inviting guests over for dinner can be stressful for many reason. The uncertainty of who will get along with who. Not knowing if you’ll have to cut someone off from the bar. Wondering if so-and-so’s new boyfriend is vegan or vegetarian… and what the heck the difference between those two even is! But having people over doesn’t have to be the headache we often make it out to be!

In my experience, the dinner parties and gatherings I remember most are not the ones where everyone behaved, the food was the right temperature, or the place settings matched the dishes being served. The get-togethers that stick in my mind are the ones where I turnt he steak into beef jerky because I’m enthralled with someone’s storytelling skills. Or the parties where we packed 16 people around our dining table meant for 8. Some of my favorite shared meal experiences are when everything goes wrong that could go wrong but I end up making a new friend or learning something special about an old friend.

You might have gotten this far and are beginning to realize this blog post won’t give you a secret recipe for perfect salmon, or how the seasons should impact how you set the table. I would argue that throwing the perfect dinner party is one that brings people together in meaningful ways and creates memories that last a lifetime. The key to throwing the perfect dinner party is letting go of expectations and letting your guests be free to be themselves. Sure, a custom dining room table that fits perfectly in your space can do wonders for bringing people together. But the glue that will hold you and your friends and family are the mistakes, memories and magic that happens AROUND that table. So here’s to the burnt steak, the spilled wine, the awkward conversations and the lasting memories that happen when we let go of the way things “have to be” and be ready for whatever the evening throws your way!
